Active and passive transformation - In the physical sciences, an active transformation is one which actually changes the physical state of a system and makes sense even in the absence of a coordinate system whereas a passive transformation is merely a change in the coordinate system of no physical significance. The distinction between active and passive transformations is one which should always be kept in mind when working with transformations.
Passive radiator - A passive radiator or parasitic element is a radio antenna element which does not have any wired input. Instead, it absorbs radio waves radiated from another active antenna element in close proximity, and re-radiates it in phase with the active element so that it adds to the total transmitted signal.
Active device - An electrical circuit consists of various components or devices or elements, which may be active or passive. Active devices are sources of energy, converting between forms of energy: chemical, hydraulic, thermal energy, mechanical , nuclear, solar, etc, into electrical energy, driving electrical current around the circuit and hence delivering continuous energy to it.
Passive armour - Passive armour describes shielding that is chemically inert and doesn't require electricity or active sensors to operate. Any vehicle with a skin designed to protect it from external attack is considered to have passive armor.
